The fee for a certificate of the right of inheritance (probate certificate) is calculated under the official notarial tariff from the value of the estate and amounts to half of the transaction-value scale. The tariff is approved by Government of Georgia Resolution No. 507 of 29 December 2011; Resolution No. 272 of 30 May 2022 abolished the former flat rate of 20 GEL for a certificate issued without valuing the property. On this page we explain how the amount is calculated, how it is shared among several heirs and which related notarial costs you may meet when formalising an inheritance.

## How the fee for an inheritance certificate is calculated

Under Article 18 of the Rules, the fee for issuing an inheritance certificate is calculated from the value of the estate, and under Article 29 it is half of the rates set by Article 23(1). This is the same ten-tier scale that applies to bilateral transactions: up to and including 500 GEL — 3%; from 501 to 1,000 GEL — 15 GEL plus 2.5% of the amount above 500 GEL; and so on. The full scale is set out in the service [“Structuring and Notarization of a Notarial Deed”](https://legal.ge/en/service/notariat-and-civil-acts-en/structuring-and-notarization-of-a-notarial-deed-loan-gift-and-lease-en). If the value of the estate is expressed in a foreign currency, the fee is calculated at the lari exchange rate set by the National Bank of Georgia for the day of payment.

**Worked example:** if the estate is valued at 100,000 GEL and there is one heir, the scale gives 362.5 GEL (122.5 GEL + 0.3% of 80,000 GEL), and the inheritance certificate fee is half of that — 181.25 GEL. The 5 GEL registry fee is added, and a VAT-registered notary adds 18% VAT.

## Several heirs, a spouse's share and securities

Where there are several heirs, the fee is calculated in proportion to each heir's share. For property acquired while the spouses lived together and left after the death of one of them, the fee is calculated only from the value of the part for which the inheritance certificate is issued, and that value is taken from public-registry data. For securities, the fee is calculated from their value, or from their nominal value if the market price cannot be established. To calculate the fee in advance, it is therefore important to define precisely which property and which share the certificate covers.
