Aleksandre Elisashvili Charged with Attempted Terrorism at Tbilisi City Court

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has charged Aleksandre Elisashvili with attempted terrorism at the Tbilisi City Court.

A joint investigation by the Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs established that on November 29, at approximately 04:00, Aleksandre Elisashvili, masked and armed with a firearm, ammunition, and items necessary for carrying out a terrorist act, arrived at the Tbilisi City Court building. Using a hammer, he shattered the glass of the court chancellery's outer facade and penetrated the court's interior.

After illegally entering the building, Aleksandre Elisashvili poured a large amount of flammable liquid in various parts of the interior, including on items and documentation located there, and attempted to start a fire by igniting it.

Employees of the Court Marshal Service caught Aleksandre Elisashvili in the process of pouring the flammable liquid. Upon seeing one of the marshals, Aleksandre Elisashvili attacked and began beating him. During the arrest, three officers of the Marshal Service tried to neutralize Aleksandre Elisashvili, disarm him, and prevent him from igniting the flammable substance. The attacker, in turn, attempted to draw and use his firearm. For approximately 5-6 minutes, Aleksandre Elisashvili put up active resistance against the marshals, after which it became possible to finally neutralize and detain him.

The detainee has been charged under Article 19-323, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, for attempted terrorism, which carries a sentence of 10 to 15 years of imprisonment.

The Prosecutor's Office has already applied to the court with a motion to impose imprisonment as a measure of restraint for the accused.
