The short answer. If you are a foreigner planning a divorce in Georgia (the country), start on legal.ge: describe your situation in the Ask form and it reaches several verified family lawyers at once, or choose a lawyer from the civil law list, which covers family matters. Around ten verified lawyers on legal.ge handle family cases, and nearly all of them work in English.
Prepare before your first message
Marriage: the marriage certificate, and where the marriage was registered.
Identity: both spouses' passports, and residence documents if you have them.
Children: their birth certificates, if you have children.
Agreements: a marriage contract, or anything you have already agreed on property or the children.
Your spouse: where they live now, and whether they agree.
What to ask the lawyer
Whether your divorce can be handled in Georgia, given where each of you lives and where you married.
Whether your home country will recognise the result, and what you will need to do there afterwards.
Whether you must be in Georgia in person, or the lawyer can act for you.
Which of your documents need a translation or an apostille.
How the children, support and shared property would be dealt with in your case.
If you live outside Georgia
Family lawyers often hold consultations by video, so the first conversation does not need a trip. Ask early what you will have to sign, a power of attorney for example, and where you can sign it.
Language and fees
A few of the family lawyers on legal.ge also work in Russian. Published consultation fees run from GEL 100 to GEL 300; ask for a written estimate of the whole matter.
